Connecting Students to
Agriculture
With less than two percent of the population raising and growing food for everyone, many adults (and even more children) have no idea of where their food comes from. Part of the Texas Crossroads mission is to expose as many people as we can to both agriculture and the cowboy genres of entertainment. The 2012 Texas Crossroads Gathering will be giving biology and science teachers a unique opportunity to bring agriculture into their classrooms. The Culberson County 4H Club will be holding their Agriculture Fair in conjunction with the Crossroads Gathering. The kids will be interviewed by Van Horn High School English students about their displays, while being video taped by students from the technology classes. These interviews will be live-streamed to the internet and available to classrooms from coast to coast and around the world. Every hour we will be changing the students both in front of and behind the camera from 8AM until 3PM central time. For those teaching English, or the arts, we also live-stream video of all of our main stage performances to the internet. Cowboy music and poetry, like rap, gives a description of a lifestyle, but it is much more than that. It describes the lifestyles of those who raise and grow the food your students eat. On Friday, May 18th, we will be live streaming cowboy poetry, music and stories to the internet from 8AM until 4PM Central time. We will be setting up the video channels on May 17th and announcing it on Facebook, @Texascrossroad on twitter and our newsletter (which you can sign up for at the top of the page). We are hoping to reach at least a hundred schools with our uploads in 2012. Let your fellow educators know about this opportunity to teach their students about where their food comes from as well as introduce them to a "new" genre without the sex and violence, or synthesized sounds of today's fenced in society! There are agritainers scattered around the country willing to go to schools, corporate or private events to entertain and teach about agriculture. Are you a farmer or rancher, who would like to become involved in reaching consumers or students? We can work with you to develop an open house or field trips from your local schools so they can see exactly what you do. We are also willing to work with any groups, agricultural or not, to fulfill our goals of teaching about agriculture in an entertaining way. The video below is cowboy poet Tony Argento giving a short program to the students at the Valentine, Texas school. If you like this, Contact us and lets see what we can do together! |
